Papa Roach
Sonisphere’s artist pages are written by real fans for real fans. Thanks to Tom Aylott for this one…
After being born from a conversation on a Californian football field and taking on the US underground with self-released album ‘Old Friends from Young Years’, Papa Roach and their mix of rap, heavy rock and metal were catapulted into the public consciousness with major label debut ‘Infest’.
Largely but not exclusively due to heavy rotation on MTV and radio for the album’s lead ‘Last Resort’ and follow up single ‘Between Angels and Insects’ , the band went from support tours with Incubus and Static-X in the US to hijacking the main stage of the Ozzfest on both sides of the pond. Infest remains one of the defining rock records of the last decade, and the band were destined to be synonymous with the heyday of Nu Metal as soon it hit shelves.
2002’s ‘lovehatetragedy’ debuted even higher on the billboard chart than its predecessor and single ‘She Loves Me Not’, accompanied by a video set in a derelict carnival, cemented the band as an anthemic alternative to formulaic rock-metal dirge.
Unwilling to be labelled a one-trick pony and join the ranks of those fading around them, Papa Roach revised their sound for third major label album ‘Getting Away With Murder’ and achieved Gold sales in the US for single ‘Scars’.
Before returning to record and release follow up ‘The Paramour Sessions’ in its namesake mansion in 2006, the band toured extensively with the likes of 311, Slipknot and Skindred, proving they were a force still to be reckoned with in their typically energetic live performances.
Having fended off the stagnation that many of their peers fell victim to, Papa Roach still sound brutally fresh after six full length albums. 2009 saw the release of latest effort ‘Metamorphosis’, and the band’s UK festival exclusive at Knebworth for Sonisphere 2010 is much anticipated as a surefire highlight of the weekend.
